Smoked Coffee Porter

Smoked Coffee Porter, Brouwerij Emelisse, Kamperland, Netherlands
(Porter)
Pours as black as night with a very thin, tan head. Aroma is nearly all smoke. Picking up faint coffee and cured bacon. Taste is dark malts roasted over a campfire, salty, almost like a chicory beef-stick. The coffee is definitely beat down by the smoked flavor. Dry finish.

Black Marlin Porter

Black Marlin Porter, Ballast Point Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
(Porter, Rated 96)
Deep brown pour with a frothy, mocha head. Decadent aromas of roasted coffee, chocolate, sweet caramel, and malt. Taste is similar. Dark roasted coffee, chocolate sweetness, and a little bit of a hoppy, bitter finish that just tingles the tongue. Medium mouthfeel. Light carbonation and drinkable at 6% abv. Really good porter here.

New World Porter

New World Porter, Avery Brewing Company, Boulder, CO
(Porter, Rated 98)
Definitely wasn't expecting this. Pours a dark mahogany with a tan head. Aromas are subtle notes of chocolate and roasted coffee. The taste is where things went different for me. A combination of the chocolate and roasted coffee flavors of a porter and floral hops of an IPA. Hops aren't overbearing, but more than normally found in a porter. Nearly more like a black IPA than a porter. Medium body with minimal carbonation and a light finish.

Mocha Porter

Mocha Porter, Rogue Ales, Newport, OR
(Porter, Rated 95)
Here's another brewery that puts out some really good, quality beer. Rogue, the makers of Dead Guy Ale (one of my favorites), haven't disappointed. This porter pours a very dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate, like a stout. Taste opens smooth with roasted malts, chocolate, with a slightly hop finish. Nicely balanced yet big at 8.2% abv.

Sierra Nevada Porter

Porter, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Chico, CA
(Porter, Rated 96)

A really good porter, this one pours dark with a creamy head that fades quickly. You can smell the roasted malts and coffee right away. Sweet tasting in the beginning with a smooth finish.

Not only did I have this one on Thanksgiving Day, I cooked my dinner with it. I used this porter to bake my turkey legs and also cooked brussels sprouts with it.  Very, very tasty!

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!

Vanilla Java Porter

Vanilla Java Porter, Atwater Brewery, Detroit, MI

On the pour, this beer has no head. On the taste, the beer tasted like flat coke. It does have a nice sweet vanilla, coffee aroma, but that's about it. Not very good.

Edmund Fitzgerald Porter

Edmund Fitzgerald Porter, Great Lakes Brewing Company, Cleveland, OH
(Porter, Rated 99)

Porters are fantastic beers when done right. Great Lakes did this one right. Chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt aroma. Nice smokey, dark roasted malt flavor that's a touch sweet with hints of chocolate. Smooth finish. I had this one for dinner with pork chops with pomegranate chipotle sauce and steamed veggies. Yum!
